Chapter 7

The sight of him is startling and, for a stupid moment, we all just sit there, staring at him. But then he jerks his arm forward and starts to slip loose from the cement wall.

“Crap.” I spring to my feet and look at Mia. “Do you know of a way to fix this? I mean, I know he’s marked by possession and everything, but there has to be a way to get the mark off him.”

She nods, jumping to her feet. “There is, but it’s very painful and very dangerous to both the wolf and the person administering it.”

Wariness sweeps through me but hastily erases when Jax growls and snaps his fangs. “Whatever it is, I’ll do it.”

Her eyes slightly widen in surprise. So do Thad’s and Jayse’s. Before I can change my mind, though, Mia hurries off toward the stairway.

A beat of silence ticks by as Jayse assesses me with his brows knit. “You didn’t even ask her what it is.”

I lift a shoulder. "It's not like I'm ever cautious about stuff. In fact, you've given me a shit ton of lectures about my lack of caution.”

“I know, but …” He scrutinizes me as he slowly stands. Then he parts his lips, but before he says anything, his gaze snaps to Jax who manages to yank out one of the chains securing him to the wall. In the blink of an eye, fangs have snapped out from Jayse’s gums, his eyes tinting red.

Thad’s eyes widen, and he moves off the sofa, taking a step back from Jayse. “Easy, everyone. We don’t need a fight breaking out.”

“There won’t be as long as the werewolf behaves himself,” Jayse tells Thad with his red eyes fixed on Jax.

Seeing Jayse in full vampire form is a bit alarming, but considering that Jax is extremely close to breaking free, I’m relieved he can protect himself. Not that I want him to bite Jax. No, I want this handled rationally. Well, as rationally as a situation with a rabid, evil, marked, obsessed-with-binding-me-to-him werewolf can be.

“Stay back, Alana,” Jayse orders as he inches toward Jax.

“You stay back, too,” I warn Jayse then look at Jax. I’m not sure what to say to him, or if there’s anything I can say, that will calm him down. So, I decide to just be myself. “Easy, wolf boy. If you work yourself up into another wolf tizzy fit, your body might start doing that weird, gross half-shifting thing, and I’d really rather not see that again.

Jax lets out a reverberating growl at my movement, his attention fixated on me. He continues to stare at me, his eyes glowing intensely, deep growls slipping from his lips.

“You know, I’d be offended by your irritation toward me right now, but you’re like this toward me when you’re unmarked, too.” I smirk at him.

Jax moves toward me, the chains scraping against the pavement. As he nears me, his breathing quickens, his gaze never straying from mine.

Jayse’s gaze skates between the two of us.
